Maryland Knights Performing

Charitable Work Throughout the World

The first principle of the Knights of Columbus is Charity.  In the two years of the Davio Administration, this page will highlight the charitable work of Maryland Knights beyond our nation's borders.  Councils are encouraged to share their experiences by submitting stories and photos to MDKCwebsiteInputs@gmail.com

Rock Creek Council Supporting African Village of Kyarusozi, Uganda

Rock Creek Council started a new program in December of 2009 to 'adopt' and support a village in Africa (Kyarusozi, Uganda).  We were able to send $600 to Uganda before Christmas 2009, and followed up with a $500. donation about 6 months later.  This will be an ongoing program and a long term commitment to the Holy Cross sisters in Uganda.  Their work at the Kirinda education and medical center (just outside Kyarusozi) has been a tremendous help to the folks in Uganda.

We have raised additional funds for another donation and will combine it with what ever we raise at this years convention.  We expect this donation to be well over a thousand dollars and with greater participation than we had initially.  A photo display will be at the convention and we will run a 50-50 raffle in our hospitality room with the drawing held Saturday evening.  Our goal is to provide funds at least once or twice a year.  But our long term goal is to have other councils start similar programs to support other villages or towns in need.  Imagine how much impact we can have on world poverty if each of the more than 12,000 council supported one village.  As one council, we can not help every village but we will definitely help ONE, Kyarusozi, Uganda.

Our point of contact is with the Holy Cross Sisters development office in Notre Dame, Indiana. (Sr. Rose Edward Goodrow -  rgoodrow@cscsisters.org )   Anyone interested may contact her directly or contact me at wmchin987@gmail.com

More Support - Update Following Maryland's 2011 Convention

Rock Creek Council 2797 held a 50-50 raffle at the 2011 Maryland State Convention to support Holy Cross sisters in Uganda.

Rock Creek Council #2797 ran a display and fundraiser at this year's Maryland State Convention in Ocean City, Maryland.  More than 200 dollars (208) was raised in two 50-50 raffles to help support the Holy Cross sisters in Kyarusozi, Uganda.  Mike Horan and Chris Walsh were the two raffle winners.

Together with previous funds raised, this year Rock Creek Council will send $1,000. to Kyarusozi, Uganda.  The Holy Cross sisters there, run a Family Health and Education Center.  Over the past two years Rock Creek Council has helped the Holy Cross sisters with over two thousand dollars.  Rock Creek Council has adopted Kyarusozi, Uganda and is committed to supporting the Holy Cross sisters for as long as help is needed.

Kyarusozi is a "sub-county" to Fort Portal.   It can be located in Google maps by locating Kampala, Uganda and  following Fort Portal road (the road due west of Kampala) west to the large lake that borders Uganda on the North.  It is just about due south from the southwestern edge of the lake.  You will need to zoom-in on the map to see the small towns and village names displayed.

The Holy Cross sisters provide medical care and education to many of the villages in the area.  Pre-natal and post natal services as well as immunizations are just some of the services rendered.  Patients often have to walk 5 or more miles to the clinic or to the villages where the sisters or nurses are stationed.  The nearest hospital is 6 hours away by car.  There are very few vehicles in the area, so an ambulance or similar vehicle is high on their lists of needs.

Other councils who may want to run a similar program can contact the Holy Cross development office in Notre Dame, Indiana.  The Holy Cross sisters have many other towns and villages that need support in the US and in many other countries.  Often times, it is difficult to find charities that do not have a lot of overhead or advertising costs that dilute the effectiveness of your donations.   Here, we contribute directly to the folks who are doing the work in the field.

There are thousands of villages that need our help throughout the world and there happens to be thousands of Councils in our order.  IF each council could support just one village, we would have an incredible impact on the lives of millions.

We thank all the folks who stopped in and purchased a raffle ticket.
